About

Backcountry camping in Capitol Reef National Park provides access to remote hiking routes and pristine wilderness areas across the park's 240,000+ acres. The park features diverse terrain including slot canyons, gorges, and elevated viewpoints along the Waterpocket Fold. A free backcountry permit is required and must be obtained in person at the visitor center during normal business hours. Winter hours run December through March with the visitor center open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while extended hours operate during summer months. Backcountry camping is prohibited within one-half mile or within sight and sound of maintained roads and trails. Certain canyon areas have seasonal closures to protect sensitive resources, and flash flood danger exists during monsoon season. Backpackers should be prepared for remote, primitive conditions with no amenities.
