About
Ashley Lake South Campground is a small, intimate camping destination located on the south shore of Ashley Lake in the Flathead National Forest, just 12 miles west of Kalispell, Montana. With only 2 campsites available, this primitive campground offers a quiet, secluded experience for campers seeking a peaceful lakeside retreat. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, and a vault toilet serves the campground. A walk-down boat launch provides access to Ashley Lake for non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks and canoes, making it ideal for paddlers and anglers. The campground is free to use and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations accepted. Campers should note that no potable water is available, so bringing an adequate supply is essential. The access road features a sharp hairpin corner that makes the campground unsuitable for RVs and trailers. The campground is open seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day and enforces a 5-day maximum stay limit with quiet hours from 10 PM to 6 AM. Ashley Lake itself offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, and paddling in a scenic mountain setting. The small size and lack of amenities make this campground best suited for tent campers and those seeking a primitive camping experience. Due to the heavy usage level reported by the Forest Service, arriving early in the day or visiting during weekdays may improve chances of securing one of the two sites during peak summer season.
