About

American River Guard Station is a rustic Depression-era cabin built in 1941 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Located about 40 miles west of Naches on the banks of the American River, this National Register-eligible historic structure served as a summer residence for fire patrol and recreation management personnel. The one-and-a-half story cabin features a small kitchen with electric range and refrigerator, living area with queen sleeper sofa, one bedroom with full bed, and a loft with four twin beds, accommodating up to 8 guests. The cabin includes a wood stove, electric baseboard heater, dining table, and basic kitchenware. Outside amenities include a restored two-seater outhouse, picnic table, and fire ring. Nestled in old-growth forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar, the guard station provides access to the William O. Douglas and Norse Peak Wilderness areas, Bumping Lake, and the Pacific Crest Trail. The location offers year-round recreation including fishing for rainbow and brown trout in the American River, hiking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The cabin is conveniently located 30 minutes from Chinook Pass and Mount Rainier National Park along the scenic Mather Memorial Parkway.
