About
On February 2, 1912, Aldo Leopold wrote to his fiancée that the Forest Service had appropriated $650 to build new supervisor's quarters he designed at Tres Piedras. Leopold, who would become known as the father of wildlife ecology, built the house that year and called it "Mi Casita." It was here he began formulating the land ethic that would later appear in his classic work, A Sand County Almanac. The Craftsman-style bungalow was restored by Historicorps and the Carson NF in 2005. The 1,300 sq ft home accommodates up to 8 guests across four bedrooms with two queen beds and six twins. Amenities include a fully equipped kitchen with gas range, oven, and microwave, one bathroom with flush toilet and claw-foot tub/shower, and covered front and back porches. Parking accommodates approximately 8 vehicles. The fireplace is decorative only and not for use. Guests must bring potable water, sleeping bags/linens, towels, toilet paper, paper towels, and soap. This is a non-smoking facility in a remote area with very limited cell service. The nearest gas station is 30 miles north in Antonito, Colorado. No RVs or tent camping are permitted on site.
Directions
Address: 13 Rodando Road, Tres Piedras, NM 87577. The house is approximately 33 miles west of Taos and 25 miles from the Colorado border. From US 285, look for Aldo Leopold House signs and turn at the Tres Piedras post office. Drive through a green gate and continue approximately 0.1 mile down a well-maintained dirt driveway.
