About

The El Rito Campground Group Shelter is a fenced and gated group camping area situated along the banks of El Rito Creek in Carson National Forest. The centerpiece is a beautiful timber shelter constructed on a concrete foundation in 2018, located in a large grassy meadow 200 feet from the creek. At 7,600 feet elevation, the site is surrounded by pinon, cottonwood, spruce, juniper, and Gambel oak, with dramatic red cliffs visible in the distance. This dedicated group area accommodates up to 75 people and includes a large grill with pedestal at the shelter, seven picnic tables (four at the shelter, three dispersed), three additional campfire rings throughout the site, and space for up to five large RV trailers plus ample tent camping. A vault toilet and trash receptacle are provided. The site is reserved exclusively through Recreation.gov, ensuring privacy for family reunions, graduation parties, organization meetings, and school events. The nearby creek offers fishing opportunities and a place to cool off on hot days. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, and occasionally bears or mountain lions. Experienced climbers will find rope and harness climbing areas in the vicinity. Due to proximity to other campgrounds and residences, bands and DJ services are not permitted. Visitors must bring their own drinking water as none is available on-site. A $100 deposit is required and refunded if the site is left clean with minimal trash.
