About

Laguna Larga is a primitive dispersed camping area located on the shores of Laguna Larga lake deep within Carson National Forest's Tres Piedras Ranger District. At 9,000 feet elevation, the campground sits in a high-altitude setting surrounded by spruce-fir and aspen stands, offering a peaceful retreat for anglers and those seeking solitude. The site features approximately 4 designated camping spots plus additional dispersed camping opportunities around the lake. Facilities are minimal: a single vault toilet in the parking area and nothing else. There is no potable water, so campers must bring all water supplies. The nearest services are 25 miles south in the village of Tres Piedras. Access requires navigating Forest Roads 87 and 78 from US Highway 285. The final stretch on FR 78 is rough and unmaintained, with deep ruts reported. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, and trailers should be left behind. The remote location and challenging access contribute to the campground's lightly-used character, making it ideal for those seeking a true backcountry experience with convenient lake access for fishing.

Directions

From Tres Piedras, drive north on US Highway 285 for approximately 9.5 miles. Turn west onto County Road 439, continuing on CR 441 and then Forest Road 87 and FR 78/78A for approximately 14-15 miles total to reach the campground. High-clearance vehicle recommended due to rough road conditions on FR 78.
