About

Al Taylor Cabin sits at 6,300 feet elevation adjacent to Steel Creek, near both Camas Meadows and the Continental Divide in Idaho's Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The cabin is surrounded by large Douglas fir trees and offers incredible views of the surrounding landscape. Built in 1935 by Albert Edward Taylor as a summer getaway, the one-room cabin now serves as a Forest Service rental. The cabin accommodates up to six guests and is equipped with a wood cook stove, wood fireplace, propane lights, wooden bunk beds, and a small dining table with four chairs. There is no electricity. Outdoor amenities include a fire ring, charcoal grill, picnic tables, vault toilet, and bear-resistant garbage containers. Drinking water is available from a hand pump at Steel Creek Campground, located about 1/4 mile from the cabin. Popular activities in the area include accessing the off-highway vehicle trail system directly from the cabin, fishing for brook trout in nearby streams, hiking, horseback riding, and sightseeing. The historic Camas Meadows Battlefield on the Nez Perce National Historic Trail is located nearby.

Directions

From Kilgore, Idaho: Travel west on Forest Road 006 approximately 8 miles to Forest Road 478, then continue to the Steel Creek Group Area. The cabin is located just outside the group area. Alternatively, from I-15 take the Stoddard Creek Exit and travel east on Forest Road 006 approximately 13 miles to Forest Road 478. Road access is available mid-May through mid-November; winter access requires snowmobile.
