Big Rock Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground typically operates April through November and closes December 1. Reopens in spring, usually mid-April.

Special Weather Statement issued March 29 at 1:56AM EDT by NWS Charleston WV

1:56 AM — 8:00 PM

A combination of dry vegetation, relative humidity lowering to around 15 to 25% and winds gusting to around 15 to 25 mph will result in increased fire danger today. Residents and visitors are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Additionally, exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks and keep vehicles off of dry grass. Most dry grasses, dead leaves, and other tree litter could easily ignite and spread fire quickly. West Virginia law prohibits burning in the spring from 7AM to 5PM...March 1st through May 31st.

About

Big Rock Campground is a small, primitive campground located along the Cranberry River in the Gauley Ranger District of Monongahela National Forest. The 5-unit campground sits approximately 7 miles north of Richwood on Forest Road 76, providing a quiet, wooded setting for campers seeking a simple outdoor experience. Operating seasonally from April through November, Big Rock is a first-come, first-served facility with no advance reservations available. Sites cost $10 per night with a maximum stay of 14 days. Each campsite features a paved spur, picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. The campground accommodates one wheeled camping unit per site (motorhome or travel trailer), up to 8 people, and a maximum of 2 vehicles. The campground's location along the Cranberry River makes it popular with anglers pursuing trout fishing. A valid West Virginia fishing license with National Forest Stamp, conservation stamp, and trout stamp is required. Nearby attractions include the Cranberry Wilderness and Cranberry Mountain Nature Center. Campers should note that no potable water is available on-site, and the official USFS information indicates restrooms are not available at this location. Dump stations and water fill are available in nearby Richwood and Marlinton.
