About
Hovey Lake Campsites is a secluded, primitive camping area in Hiawatha National Forest, located on the eastern shore of 99-acre Hovey Lake. This quiet, family-oriented campground offers four campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. The remote setting is ideal for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature. The lake serves as the headwaters of the Indian Wild and Scenic River and offers good fishing opportunities for trout, northern pike, black bass, and panfish. A carry-in boat access near the campground entrance makes it a popular spot for canoeing and kayaking. Bird watching is excellent in this area due to the undisturbed habitat. Swimming is not recommended due to shallow water and a mucky lake bottom. This is a no-fee, first-come, first-served campground with no advance reservations available. The campground is not maintained from Columbus Day through May 15, so visitors during shoulder seasons should be prepared for limited services.
