About
McKeever Cabin is a rustic rental cabin located in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, approximately 14 miles south of Munising in Schoolcraft County. Built in 1991 through a partnership between the Forest Service, Hiawatha Log Homes, and volunteers, this cabin sits on a small knoll surrounded by young evergreens and hardwood trees, overlooking the western shore of 132-acre McKeever Lake. Access varies by season. During snow-free months, visitors drive Forest Road 2163 for about a mile to a parking area, then walk a 1,000-foot trail to the cabin. Boat access from the McKeever Lake boat launch is also possible. In winter, visitors park at the Widewaters Campground entrance and ski or snowshoe approximately one mile along FR-2163 to reach the cabin. Snowmobile access is prohibited. The cabin connects directly to the McKeever Hills Cross-Country Ski Trail and Bruno's Run Trail, a 9-mile loop suitable for hiking and mountain biking in warmer months. The lake supports populations of northern muskie, northern pike, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and bluegill. Additional activities include canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hunting, and wildlife observation. The Big Island Lake Wilderness is located nearby. This is a true backcountry experience with no potable water, no electricity, and no restroom facilities. The cabin is not cleaned between visits.
Directions
From Munising, take M-28 to Forest Highway 13, located 3 miles east of Munising. Proceed south on FH-13 for 11 miles to FR-2163, located directly across from the road to the Widewaters Campground. During the snow-free season, drive east on FR-2163 for approximately one mile, following the brown signs with yellow arrows to the parking area. The hiking trail to the cabin begins before the parking lot and is approximately 1,000 feet long.
