About
Soldier Lake Campground offers a remote, relaxing escape in Michigan's Upper Peninsula within Hiawatha National Forest. The campground's 44 standard nonelectric sites are tucked among a scenic forest of pine, aspen, and maple trees surrounding 15-acre Soldier Lake. Despite feeling removed from highway noise, the campground remains conveniently accessible from M-28, which leads to some of the best sightseeing in the region. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring, with vault toilets and drinking water available throughout the campground. Two sandy beaches provide excellent swimming opportunities, and non-motorized boating is permitted on the lake. The day use area includes a historic picnic shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, featuring a fireplace and accommodating large groups. The North Country National Scenic Trail, which winds through several northern states, can be accessed directly from the day use area, making this an ideal basecamp for hikers. The nearest services including fuel, restaurants, and a general store are available in Strongs, approximately 7 miles west.
Directions
From Sault Ste. Marie, take I-75 approximately 8 miles south to Exit 386. Turn right onto M-28 and travel 21.5 miles west to Forest Road 3138. Turn left and continue less than a mile to the campground. Address: 23998 M-28, Raco, MI 49715.
