About

Doublehead Backcountry Cabin sits atop the north summit of Doublehead Mountain at 3,053 feet in White Mountain National Forest near the resort town of Jackson, New Hampshire. Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a warming hut for skiers, the cabin and trail retain their original rustic, backcountry character while nearby trails were developed into commercial ski areas. The cabin features four partitioned rooms with eight wooden bunks, two small tables, benches, and a wood stove for heating. A composting outhouse is located a short distance away. There is no potable water, insulation, or electricity. Guests must pack in all supplies including sleeping bags, pads, food, water, firewood, and trash bags. Only dead and down wood from the area may be used for fuel; firewood from outside New Hampshire is prohibited. Access is via the 1.8-mile Doublehead Ski Trail with steep grades and 1,500 feet of elevation gain. An alternative New Path trailhead is available 0.5 miles south. Limited parking accommodates approximately 6 vehicles in summer and 3-4 in winter. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov, and guests must call the Saco Ranger District at (603) 447-5448 prior to check-in to obtain the lock combination.
