About
Samsing Cove Cabin sits within a small protected cove off Sitka Sound, surrounded by hemlock and spruce forest on a gently rising slope above a rocky shoreline. The two-story log cabin was built in 1991 by local volunteers and contractors, replacing an original 1941 cabin built by the Forest Service and U.S. Navy. At low tide, a small gravel beach appears for beachcombing, while high tide creates calm waters suitable for novice kayakers. The cabin measures approximately 24 by 30 feet and sleeps up to 15 people. Interior amenities include plywood bunks on both levels, two large tables with benches, cooking counters with open shelving, and an oil stove for heat. Visitors must bring #1 diesel fuel oil for heating, which can consume five gallons in the first 24 hours and two to five gallons daily thereafter depending on weather. A pit toilet is located outside, and a mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Sitka Sound area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities including orca whales, humpback whales, puffins, sea otters, and sea lions. Brown bears frequent the area, so proper food storage and bear awareness are essential. Recreational activities include saltwater fishing, kayaking, photography, and beachcombing. Water from a nearby inlet stream must be treated before use; bringing your own drinking water is recommended.
