About
Winstanley Lake Cabin offers a remote wilderness experience in the heart of the Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness within Tongass National Forest. This rustic 1967 Pan Abode log cabin sits on the shore of its namesake lake, backed by old-growth spruce, hemlock, and cedar forest with views of the placid lake and surrounding mountains. The cabin accommodates six guests with two single and two double bunks. Amenities include a wood stove (bring your own firewood as supply cannot be guaranteed), cooking counter, table and benches, food storage, and shelves. An outhouse is located nearby. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is provided for lake exploration, though visitors must bring their own life jackets. Anglers can fish for cutthroat trout and kokanee salmon, while hunters may pursue Sitka black-tailed deer, mountain goat, and bears with proper permits. Row to the end of the lake to visit the historic Winstanley Lake Shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. Wildlife viewing opportunities include mountain goats, bears, deer, moose, and bald eagles.
Directions
Located approximately 33 air miles northeast of Ketchikan on the mainland, east of Winstanley Island. Accessible by float plane directly to the lake, or by boat to saltwater followed by a 2.5-mile hike and 2.25-mile row to the cabin. A skiff is provided at the end of the trail for the lake crossing. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Refer to USGS Ketchikan B-3.
