About

Wartrace Creek Recreation Area is a day-use facility located on Cordell Hull Lake, part of the Cumberland River System managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Situated just nine miles from Gainesboro in Jackson County, this wooded recreation area serves visitors looking for water-based activities and picnicking rather than overnight camping. The facility includes a large group picnic shelter, swimming beach, boat ramp, playground, volleyball court, fish cleaning station, flush toilets, and drinking water. A $5 per vehicle day-use fee is charged at entry. The 12,000-acre lake stretches 72 miles upstream with 381 miles of shoreline, providing ample opportunities for boating, sailing, water skiing, jet skiing, and fishing. Anglers target white bass, rockfish, largemouth bass, catfish, shad, and crappie in these waters. Cordell Hull Lake sits among rolling hills covered in maple, hickory, oak, beech, and chestnut trees. Wildlife including whitetail deer, wild turkeys, quail, squirrels, rabbits, and waterfowl are commonly seen. The 6-mile Bearwaller Gap Trail is accessible from nearby Defeated Creek Park, and other area trails include Turkey Creek Nature Trail and Bear Wheels Trail. Note that pets are prohibited in the day-use area due to health department restrictions for beaches.
