About

Tow String Horse Camp is an equestrian-focused campground located 4 miles north of Cherokee, NC in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The camp provides access to some of the Smokies' most scenic horseback riding trails through ancient Appalachian mountains renowned for exceptional biodiversity. With only 3 designated sites, it offers a quieter, more primitive camping experience for horse owners seeking to explore the park's extensive trail network. Facilities are minimal but functional: each site includes a picnic table, fire ring with grill, lantern post, and tent pad. Portable toilets and bear-proof refuse containers are provided. There is no potable water; campers must bring their own drinking water, though horses can water at a nearby stream. Sites are gravel and designed for horse trailers rather than large RVs. Campers must have horses to reserve here. All horses require documentation of a current negative Coggins test. Only processed feed is permitted, and horses must be tied to trailers rather than trees. The campground enforces a 14-consecutive-day stay limit. Cherokee, just 4 miles away, offers groceries and fuel for resupply.
