About

Prospector Campground occupies a scenic position on Dillon Reservoir in the heart of Summit County, Colorado, at an elevation of 9,000 feet. The 105 sites accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 50 feet, though roads and spurs are unpaved gravel with back-in entry. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are available throughout. Due to extensive pine beetle tree removal, the campground has little to no shade. Dillon Reservoir is the primary attraction, spanning 3,233 acres with 26.8 miles of shoreline. The reservoir supports healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout, with occasional cutthroat trout from feeder streams. Boating and sailing are permitted, though all boats require aquatic nuisance species inspections. Body contact with the reservoir is prohibited, meaning no swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, or scuba diving. The surrounding White River National Forest offers extensive recreation. Over 7 paved miles of the Summit County trail system are accessible from the campground. The Old Dillon Reservoir trail provides views of the Tenmile Range and Continental Divide. For more solitude, the Ptarmigan Wilderness area is nearby. Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, Breckenridge, and Copper Mountain ski resorts are all within 10 miles.

Directions

From I-70, take exit 205 (Silverthorne). Travel east on Highway 6 approximately 4 miles to Swan Mountain Road. Turn right and travel 2 miles to the Prospector and Windy Point Campground sign. Take the dirt road 1 mile to the campground entrance.
