About

Group Camp 1 is the Pioneer Campground at Stephen C. Foster State Park, located 18 miles from Fargo in the heart of the Okefenokee Swamp. This remote park provides an immersive experience in one of the largest intact freshwater ecosystems in North America, surrounded by cypress draped in Spanish moss and abundant wildlife including alligators, black bears, and over 200 bird species. The Pioneer Campground offers primitive group camping with basic facilities including pit toilets. Unlike the park's main campground which features water and electric hookups, the Pioneer area provides a more rustic experience suited for organized groups seeking to connect with the swamp's wild character. The park requires a $5 refuge fee as it is located within the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. Paddlers can explore 25 miles of day-use waterways or arrange overnight canoe trips deeper into the swamp. The park features an interpretive center, the 1.5-mile Trembling Earth Nature Trail, and boat tour options. Due to ongoing capital improvements, some facilities including the boat basin, motorboat rentals, and boat ramp are currently unavailable.
