About
Woodbine Campground is a well-developed Forest Service campground situated along the Stillwater River at the end of Stillwater River Road in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. At 5,300 feet elevation, the wooded and shady campground offers views of surrounding 10,000-foot peaks. The 44 paved campsites accommodate tents and RVs up to 40 feet, with each site featuring a picnic table and fire ring with grill. Bear-resistant dumpsters and some sites with bear boxes help manage the active wildlife in the area. The campground serves as a gateway to exceptional recreation. The Woodbine Falls Trail begins right in camp, offering a 1.5-mile round-trip hike along Woodbine Creek to an impressive waterfall. The Stillwater Trail provides access deep into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, reaching Sioux Charley Lake at 3 miles and continuing over 20 miles into backcountry. The Stillwater River and nearby streams offer quality fishing for rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. Located 57 miles west of Red Lodge and 7 miles south of Nye, the campground is about three hours from Yellowstone National Park via the Beartooth Highway. Wildlife including deer, elk, and bear frequent the surrounding area. The nearby communities of Nye and Fishtail host summer festivals including Nye Goes Nuts in July and Fishtail Family Fun Day in late June.
Directions
From Columbus on I-90, take Montana Highway 78 south for 30 miles, then turn west onto MT-419 toward Fishtail. Continue through Nye and past the Stillwater Mine for approximately 29 miles to the campground at the end of Stillwater River Road.
