West Bridger Cabin is a charming Forest Service rental cabin located at 4,847 feet elevation in a clearing surrounded by the Beartooth Mountains of Montana. The two-room cabin sleeps up to 4 people on single beds with mattresses and provides electric lights, an electric cooking stove, and a wood-burning stove for heat. Basic cookware, dinnerware, utensils, and cleaning supplies are provided, along with an axe, maul, bucket, and shovel. Firewood for indoor heating is supplied. The cabin does not have potable water, so guests must bring their own drinking water or treat water from nearby West Bridger Creek. A vault toilet is located outside. The property includes a campfire ring and stock facilities with a small corral and fenced grazing pasture for horses. Out-of-state horses require a current Coggins test, and all hay and feed must be certified weed-free. Recreational opportunities abound, with hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails heading west into the Beartooth foothills. The 8-mile Derby Mountain Trail begins at the cabin. Casual fishing is available in West Bridger Creek, and big game hunting is popular in-season. Wildlife in the area includes moose, mule deer, elk, grizzly bear, bald eagles, and mountain bluebirds.

Directions

From Big Timber, Montana, travel 14 miles east on I-90 to Exit 384 (Bridger Creek). From the stop sign, travel south 8.2 miles to the junction of Main Bridger with West Bridger Creek Road. Turn right and continue on West Bridger Road for 2.2 miles to the junction with Derby Gulch. Stay right on West Bridger Road for 0.7 miles. Look for driveway on right with a gate about 50 yards down road. A small oak sign on the left identifies the cabin. Driveway to cabin is approximately 0.2 miles.
