About
Windmill State Recreation Area takes its name from the old-time windmills that dot the 154-acre park at the Gibbon Interchange along Interstate 80. The campground serves as a convenient stopover for travelers between Kearney and Grand Island, offering 69 camping pads with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electrical hookups alongside 23 primitive tent sites without electricity.
Six lakes covering 14 acres provide ample fishing opportunities for anglers. Only electric motors and non-powered boats are permitted, with no boat ramps available. A swimming beach at Park Lake offers warm-weather recreation, while the 18-hole disc golf course with rental discs at the park office appeals to players of all skill levels. Stargazing, wildlife viewing, and bird watching round out the recreational offerings.
Facilities include two modern restrooms, two shower houses with laundry, drinking water throughout, and a dump and fill station. Many sites are pull-through configuration accommodating RVs up to 80 feet. Peak season reservations open 180 days in advance from April 15 through October 15, with the remaining sites first-come, first-served. Off-season camping operates entirely on a first-come, first-served basis with reduced rates.
Directions
From I-80, take Exit 285 (Gibbon Interchange). The park entrance is approximately 3 miles south of Gibbon.
