About

Calamus State Recreation Area sits in the heart of Nebraska's Sandhills, 6 miles northwest of Burwell. The 11,720-acre recreation area encompasses the 5,123-acre Calamus Reservoir (Virginia Smith Dam), offering some of the state's finest camping and fishing opportunities. The rolling sandhills terrain and expansive reservoir create a distinctive landscape for outdoor recreation. The park operates three main campgrounds: Homestead Knolls, Nunda Shoal, and Valley View Flat. Combined, these offer 122 improved pads with 30/50 amp electrical service and 55 non-pad primitive sites. Each campground has shower house facilities, and the park provides a dump station for RV waste disposal. Sites accommodate RVs up to 50 feet at Homestead Knolls and Nunda Shoal, with shorter limits at Hannamon Bayou. Calamus Reservoir is a premier fishing destination with year-round opportunities for walleye, white bass, wipers, channel catfish, northern pike, muskie, and crappie. Five boat ramps provide lake access, and dock slips are available. The park also features an unsupervised swimming beach, hiking trails, and a nearby fish hatchery and visitor center.
