About

Calamus State Recreation Area is among Nebraska's most popular camping destinations, situated in the heart of the beautiful Sandhills region. The recreation area encompasses a 5,123-acre reservoir and 4,958 acres of gently rolling land covered with native grasses. Three developed campgrounds offer 122 electric hookup sites (30/50 amp) and 55 basic non-pad sites, all with access to modern restrooms and shower facilities. Homestead Knolls, Nunda Shoal, and Valley View Flat campgrounds provide mature shade trees and easy lake access. The reservoir is a premier fishing destination for walleye, white bass, wipers, channel catfish, muskie, northern pike, and crappie. The adjacent Calamus Fish Hatchery offers self-guided tours and educational displays. Recreation opportunities include boating on four docks and five ramps, swimming from sand beaches, picnicking at 204 tables, and exploring the Calamus River. The area also features naturalist programs, birding events, and an annual pumpkin carving festival. Multiple concessions provide boat rentals, bait, groceries, and dining options.
