About
Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area is located approximately 5 miles northeast of Loup City in central Nebraska, offering extensive recreational opportunities on over 2,800 acres of water and more than 4,700 acres of surrounding land. Built by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1961 across Oak Creek, the reservoir is well-known for its excellent fishing and boating. The recreation area provides over 300 primitive non-pad campsites distributed across nine locations around the reservoir, plus 61 developed pads with electrical hookups in the expanded West Ridge and Middle Ridge campgrounds. The primitive sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis and offer a rustic camping experience amid rolling prairie grasslands with woody growth along creeks. Additional RV camping with electric and water hookups is available through Trade Winds Marina, a private concessionaire. Anglers are drawn to the reservoir for its diverse fishery, including walleye, crappie, white bass, northern pike, and channel and flathead catfish. The recreation area features four boat ramps, fish cleaning stations, and multiple access points around the shoreline. Additional facilities include picnic tables, shelters, a dump station, modern restrooms, vault toilets, coin-operated showers, and hiking trails through various habitat types.
