Special Weather Statement issued February 9 at 7:27PM CST by NWS Hastings NE

7:27 PM — February 10th, 12:00 PM

Unseasonably-warm temperatures will continue to promote steady ice melt and ice movement along the Platte, North Loup, Middle Loup, South Loup and Loup Rivers in central and south central Nebraska over the next few days. This could result in the continued formation of localized ice jams. Should any ice jams happen to develop, water levels could fluctuate as much as 1 to 3 feet in a short time, causing flooding with little, if any notice. This is especially true for known, ice jam prone locations. If any ice jam flooding is observed over the next few days along the Platte or Loup River systems in central and south central Nebraska, please report it immediately to the National Weather Service in Hastings.

The recreation area features two primary lakes: Mormon Island West with 42 surface acres and the middle island with 19 surface acres, both maintained as no-wake zones ideal for peaceful paddling. The campground offers Electric Plus, Electric, and Basic camping options with modern amenities including restrooms, showers, dump and fill stations, and laundry facilities. Two electrical campsites at Cedar Campground feature accessible amenities. The park provides abundant day-use facilities with numerous picnic tables, fire rings, grills, four small picnic shelters, and one large group pavilion that seats approximately 50 guests. Fishing opportunities abound with largemouth bass, redear sunfish, black crappie, walleye, channel catfish, bluegill, and muskellunge in Lake 1. Accessible fishing docks and boat ramps on Lakes 1 and 2 provide easy water access. The marked swimming beaches with shower houses make this a popular summer destination.
