Fort Kearny State Recreation Area spans 186 acres with sandpit lakes created from gravel extraction, offering a variety of recreational opportunities including camping, swimming, fishing, and hiking. The park operates year-round and is particularly popular during spring sandhill crane migrations when hundreds of thousands of cranes stage along the nearby Platte River. The campground features 120 single-family sites divided between East and West campgrounds. East Campground offers Electric Plus sites with 50-amp or 20/30-amp connections with dedicated water hookups. West Campground provides a mix of Electric Plus, standard Electric (20/30-amp), and Basic sites without hookups. Stately cottonwood trees, some over 100 years old, shade much of the camping area. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring or grill. Facilities include modern restrooms with flush toilets, coin-operated showers (75 cents for three minutes), and a dump and fill station. The park also features a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier, swimming beach, nature trails, playground, and disk golf course. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance online or by calling 1-844-637-2757; remaining sites are first-come, first-served with payment via the Iron Ranger self-registration system.
