Fort Kearny State Recreation Area spans 186 acres of sandpit lakes and cottonwood groves in south-central Nebraska, offering exceptional year-round camping opportunities. The campground is divided into East and West sections, with a total of 120 campsites ranging from basic primitive sites to electric plus sites with water hookups. Stately cottonwood trees, some over 100 years old, provide generous shade throughout much of the camping area. The campground caters to both tent campers and RVers, with 94 electric sites featuring 30/50 amp service and 26 non-electric sites. Some sites offer full hookups with both electric and water connections. Modern facilities include flush restrooms, hot showers, a dump and fill station, and drinking water. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. While 38 electric sites are available for advance reservation through the Nebraska Game and Parks reservation system, many sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Fort Kearny is particularly renowned for its prime location near the central Platte River valley, where the world's largest concentration of sandhill cranes and waterfowl gathers each spring during migration. Beyond wildlife viewing, the recreation area offers a swimming beach, wheelchair-accessible fishing pier, nature trails, hike-bike trails, and non-powered boating on the sandpit lakes. The campground's location just off Interstate 80 makes it easily accessible for travelers, while remaining close to Fort Kearny State Historical Park.
