About

Welaka Primitive Campsites are located within the 2,000-acre Welaka State Forest along the St. Johns River in Putnam County, Florida. The two primitive campsites, Orange Point and John's Landing, are accessed either by hiking 2 miles on the Johns Landing Trail from the parking area off County Road 309 or by boat from the St. Johns River. Both sites offer peaceful, backcountry camping with basic amenities including picnic tables and fire rings, but no water or electricity. The forest features diverse ecosystems including sandhills, longleaf pine savannas, wiregrass flatwoods, and river swamps. Mud Spring, which flows 13,750 gallons per hour of clear water into the St. Johns River, is a notable feature of the area. The forest is home to a large population of gopher tortoises and is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail and the Bartram Trail. Recreational opportunities include hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, photography, and birdwatching. Campers should be prepared for primitive conditions and pack in all necessary water and supplies. The forest also hosts equestrian facilities and trails in other areas. This is an ideal destination for experienced campers seeking a true backcountry experience in Florida's river swamp ecosystem.
