Access depends entirely on seasonal conditions along the Lolo Motorway. The road is typically impassable due to snow from late fall through early summer and may not open until July in heavy snow years. No reservations, first-come first-served primitive camping.

About

Weitas Meadows Camp is a primitive dispersed camping area located at a scenic mountain meadow along the Lolo Motorway in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests of north-central Idaho. The site sits within the Lolo Trail National Historic Landmark corridor, an area rich in both Native American and Lewis and Clark expedition history. The meadow serves as a trailhead for Trail 40, the Nee-Me-Poo National Historic Trail, which commemorates the 1877 flight of the Nez Perce. A well-maintained boardwalk meanders along one side of the meadow before climbing up to Green Saddle. The site was the August 2, 1877 campsite of both the fleeing Nez Perce people and the pursuing U.S. Army. Access to Weitas Meadows requires traveling the Lolo Motorway (Forest Road 500), a primitive, winding road through extremely remote country that demands a high-clearance vehicle and self-sufficiency. Average vehicle speeds on the motorway are between 5 and 10 mph. The road is typically only accessible during summer months when free of snow.

Directions

From Weippe, Idaho, travel northeast on Forest Road 100 to its junction with Forest Road 500 (Lolo Motorway). Take Forest Road 500 east along the ridge. The motorway is a primitive, single-lane road requiring high-clearance vehicles with average speeds of 5-10 mph. Specific mileage to Weitas Meadows varies by entry point.
