About

Weitas Butte Lookout is a historic fire lookout tower situated along the iconic Lolo Motorway in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests of north-central Idaho. Originally constructed in 1931 as part of the Forest Service's fire detection network, the current timbered structure visitors see today was rebuilt in 1953. The lookout stands at 5,967 feet elevation, approximately 3 miles north of Rocky Ridge Lake. The cabin sleeps up to four guests and features a woodstove and propane heater for warmth during cool mountain nights. No potable water is available on site, so visitors must bring their own water supply. A vault toilet is provided nearby. The remote location offers exceptional solitude and sweeping vistas of the surrounding wilderness. Positioned along the Nez Perce and Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, the lookout provides a unique opportunity to experience the same landscapes that Lewis and Clark traversed over 200 years ago. Recreation opportunities in the area include day hiking, OHV riding on forest roads, lake fishing, horseback riding, and scenic driving along the historic Lolo Motorway.
