About

Built in 1943, Weasel Cabin is a historic Forest Service structure nestled in the Ten Lakes Scenic Area of the Kootenai National Forest in northwestern Montana. The cabin sits along Weasel Creek and Otter Creek at approximately 4,990 feet elevation, roughly 15 miles northeast of Eureka near the Canadian border. Unlike most Forest Service cabin rentals that require reservations through Recreation.gov, Weasel Cabin operates on a first-come, first-serve basis with no fees. This makes it an appealing option for spontaneous backcountry trips, though visitors should be prepared for basic conditions. The area was impacted by the 2022 Weasel Fire, which burned over 2,500 acres in the vicinity. The Ten Lakes Scenic Area offers over 89 miles of trails for hiking and horseback riding, with spectacular alpine lakes and mountain scenery along the Whitefish Mountain ridge. The remote location and primitive facilities make this cabin best suited for experienced backcountry travelers who are self-sufficient.
