About

Mt. Wam Lookout Cabin is a historic Forest Service fire lookout that served as an observation point for spotting forest fires from 1931 until it was abandoned in 1951. The structure was restored in 1999 and subsequently offered as a rental cabin through Recreation.gov. The lookout sits atop Mount Wam at 7,203 feet elevation within the Ten Lakes Wilderness Study Area, approximately 6 miles south of Eureka, Montana. The 196-square-foot cabin sleeps four and was equipped with two twin-size bed platforms, four thin sleeping pads, a woodstove for heat, and miscellaneous cooking utensils. An outdoor pit toilet is located nearby, while the nearest water source is a small spring 0.8 miles from the cabin. Guests were advised to bring their own drinking water. The cabin has no electricity. Reaching the lookout requires a multi-trail approach from Highway 93 south of Eureka via Forest Roads 114, 7021, and 7022, then hiking Trails 81, 78, and 339 to the summit. The 5-mile hike gains significant elevation and is not suitable for small children. The location rewards visitors with sweeping views of the Canadian Rockies to the north, Galton Mountains to the west, Whitefish Range to the south, and Glacier National Park to the east.

Directions
