Watson Mill Bridge State Park

Open

About

Watson Mill Bridge State Park preserves Georgia's longest original-site covered bridge, a 229-foot town-lattice truss structure built in 1885 spanning the South Fork River. The park's 1,018 acres offer a quiet retreat in Madison County with opportunities for camping, hiking, fishing, and horseback riding along 15 miles of dedicated equestrian trails. The main campground features 21 sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 50 feet, each with water and electric hookups. Most sites are pull-through with good tree cover for shade and privacy. The equestrian area has 11 campsites and 22 horse stalls, making this a popular destination for riders. Three primitive pioneer campsites along Big Cloud Creek offer a more secluded experience with water but no electricity. Three log cabin bunkhouses sleeping eight each provide an alternative for groups. Facilities include comfort stations with flush toilets and showers, a dump station, playground, and washer/dryer. Fishing is available along the river and creek, with canoe and kayak rentals typically offered when equipment is operational. The historic covered bridge is open to pedestrian traffic but has a 9-foot height clearance and 3-ton weight limit for vehicles.

Directions

From Athens, take US-29 North approximately 22 miles. Turn right on Watson Mill Road and continue 3 miles to the park entrance. RVs and large vehicles must enter from Highway 22 to avoid the covered bridge (9-foot clearance, 3-ton limit). GPS navigation may route through the bridge; review the park map before arrival.
