About

Duran Canyon Campground sits in a scenic, shaded setting of spruce-fir and aspen at approximately 9,400 feet elevation in the Carson National Forest near Peñasco, New Mexico. The campground offers 12 single campsites spread along Duran Creek, providing a quiet retreat with light usage levels ideal for those seeking solitude. The campground serves as a trailhead to La Cueva Lake Trail #8 and Duran/Policarpio Trail #13, making it popular with hikers and anglers. Duran Creek offers stream fishing opportunities. Facilities are primitive: a single vault toilet is provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. Access is via Forest Road 76, which is seasonally closed from January 1 through April 30 each year due to winter conditions. Camping is limited to 14 days within any 45-day period.

Directions

From Peñasco, NM, take Forest Road 76 to the campground. Forest Road 76 is closed to vehicles from January 1 through April 30 annually.
