About

Coyote Creek State Park sits in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains about an hour southeast of Taos, at an elevation of 7,667 feet. The small creek valley is enclosed by forests of oak, spruce, and pine, with abundant wildflowers in spring and summer and beautiful fall foliage. The park spans approximately 465 acres along Coyote Creek, which meanders through the property and is considered one of New Mexico's most densely stocked trout streams. The campground offers a mix of electric hookup sites and developed non-electric sites. Ten sites have water and electric hookups (30 amp), thirteen developed sites have water nearby without electric, and five additional developed sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is also a river group shelter with electric hookups available. Facilities include restrooms with running water and showers, as well as vault toilets throughout the park, and a centrally located RV dump station. A playground is located near the camping area. Recreational opportunities center around fishing, hiking, and wildlife watching. Coyote Creek is ideal for fly fishing, with rainbow trout, brown trout, Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and white suckers present. A maintained 2-mile hiking trail circles through the park, crossing the creek twice via a suspension bridge and passing beaver dams and ponds. The trail offers views of the surrounding mountains and opportunities for birding and wildlife viewing. The park is habitat for the New Mexico jumping meadow mouse and numerous bird species.
