About

Tawas Point State Park Campground is located on the end of a sand spit forming Tawas Bay along Lake Huron in Michigan's sunrise coast region. Known as the Cape Cod of the Midwest, this 183-acre park features a modern campground with 189 electric sites positioned along Tawas Bay, many offering water views and beach access. The campground's designated swimming beach is particularly popular for its warm, shallow waters ideal for families. The park serves as a stopover site for hundreds of migrating birds in spring and fall, making it a favorite destination for bird watchers. The historic Tawas Point Lighthouse, built in 1876, offers seasonal tours and showcases a Victorian-era station design unique to the Great Lakes. Tawas Bay is renowned for fishing opportunities including perch, walleye, trout, pike, bass, and salmon, with a limestone reef added in 1987 that has boosted the local fish population. From the park, visitors can access the Alabaster Pathway and Tawas Bay Bike Path, part of Michigan's Iron Belle Trail, which runs about 4 miles to East Tawas. The park offers year-round recreation including swimming, fishing, hiking, paddling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Modern restroom facilities with showers remain open throughout the year, making the campground accessible even during winter months.
