About
Monument Campground holds the distinction of being one of the first campgrounds built in Huron National Forest, dating back to 1909. Located 15 miles west of Oscoda along the River Road National Scenic Byway, this campground offers 19 standard nonelectric sites nestled within a red pine plantation. Each site is secluded and shaded by large oak and red pine trees near the AuSable River, which flows 138 miles east to Lake Huron. The campground provides vault toilets, potable water from faucets, trash collection, and fire grills. An on-site host is available during the operating season. Campers can access the Highbanks Hiking Trail directly from the campground or explore the scenic 22-mile River Road National Scenic Byway overlooking the AuSable River valley. Adjacent to the campground is the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center, featuring exhibits and interactive displays about the region's rich lumbering history. Visitors can climb through a log jam, operate a peavey, cut a wooden cookie with a cross-cut saw, and learn about lumberjack life through video presentations.
