Rollways Recreation Area Campground

Rollways Campground holds a special place in Huron National Forest history, having been established in 1909 as one of the first developed campgrounds in the forest. Located along the beautiful Au Sable River just off the River Road National Scenic Byway, this intimate campground offers a quiet, wooded retreat for campers seeking a classic northern Michigan experience. The campground features 19 pull-through sites, all with paved spurs and roads, making it suitable for larger rigs despite its rustic character. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, campfire ring, grill, tent pad, and lantern post. Vault toilets and drinking water spigots are distributed throughout the grounds. The adjacent day-use area includes picnic grounds and a historic log shelter. Recreation opportunities abound, with river and stream fishing directly accessible from the campground. A half-mile accessible hiking trail connects to the Westgate Scenic Overlook, offering views of the Au Sable River valley. Non-motorized boating is popular on this stretch of the nationally designated scenic river. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov.

Directions

From Hale, travel north on M-65 for 7 miles. Turn left on Rollways Road and the campground entrance is on the right. From Oscoda, travel west on River Road for 19 miles, turn south on M-65 for 4.5 miles, then west on Rollways Road for 500 feet.
