About

Pine River Recreation Area Campground is a rustic, developed campground located in the Huron National Forest within Alcona County, Michigan. Situated near the South Branch Pine River and adjacent to the Reid Lake Semi-Primitive Nonmotorized Area, this campground is particularly popular during fishing season. The facility includes a historic picnic shelter constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid-1940s, adding a touch of historical significance to the site. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets, but campers must bring their own water as potable water is not available on-site. Water can be treated or filtered from nearby water sources. Each campsite includes a fire pit and picnic table, and the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis at $10 per night (50% discount with Interagency Senior/Access passes). The site has limited parking capacity for approximately 5 vehicles. Recreation opportunities abound in the area, including fishing in the Pine River, hunting during appropriate seasons, day hiking, picnicking, mushroom gathering, and berry picking. The campground provides access to the surrounding national forest lands and is gated when closed during the off-season. The remote location along Rearing Pond Trail/Forest Road 4121 offers a peaceful setting for those seeking a rustic camping experience in northern Michigan's woodlands.
