About

Mole Harbor Shelter is a historic backcountry shelter built by the Civilian Conservation Corps on Admiralty Island, known to the Tlingit as Kootznoowoo, meaning "Fortress of the Bear." The 12' x 10' three-sided Adirondack-style shelter features a gravel floor and serves as a key waypoint on the renowned Cross-Admiralty Canoe Route through the Kootznoowoo Wilderness. Located on the west end of Mole Harbor and one mile north of Mole River, the shelter offers access to exceptional wilderness experiences including tidepooling opportunities created by extreme tides combining with the Mole River to form extensive tidal flats. Multiple tent sites surround the shelter area for additional camping options. A portage trail connects the shelter to Lake Alexander, approximately 40 minutes by floatplane from Juneau. The area provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing in one of the densest brown bear populations in the world, along with river and stream fishing, plant identification, and scenic viewing. Water is available from a nearby stream but must be treated. This remote location within the Admiralty Island National Monument offers experienced wilderness travelers an authentic Alaskan backcountry experience.
