About
The Mole Harbor Shelter is a historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Adirondack-style structure situated at the west end of Mole Harbor on Admiralty Island National Monument within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness. This 12' x 10' three-sided shelter features a gravel floor and provides a basecamp for exploring one of Southeast Alaska's most remote and pristine wilderness areas. Access to the shelter is exclusively by water or air: float plane from Juneau takes approximately 40 minutes, or visitors can arrive by boat, kayak, or canoe. An overland route via the Mole Harbor to Alexander Trail connects to Lake Alexander. The shelter sits on the popular cross-Admiralty canoe route, which traverses the island through a series of lakes and portages. Extreme tidal fluctuations at Mole Harbor create extensive tidal flats ideal for tidepooling, while the Mole River offers excellent fishing during summer salmon runs. Admiralty Island supports one of the highest concentrations of brown bears in North America, so proper food storage and bear awareness are essential. Day hiking opportunities abound along miles of shoreline and the enormous tidal flat.
Directions
Located on the west end of Mole Harbor, one mile north of Mole River. Access by boat, kayak, canoe, or float plane. Also accessible via the Mole Harbor to Alexander Trail from Lake Alexander. One-way flight time from Juneau is approximately 40 minutes. Suggested USGS topo map: Sitka C-1.
