About

Stough Reservoir Campground is a free primitive campground located at 6,200 feet elevation in the Warner Mountain Ranger District of Modoc National Forest. Just one mile off Highway 299 on Forest Road 43N07, it provides a cool retreat from the valleys on either side. The small reservoir is kept stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, making it a popular fishing destination. The campground features vault toilets and potable water. Campsites are positioned away from the shore but offer pleasant views of the reservoir. Small trailers and motorhomes will find access and turnarounds manageable, though larger rigs may have difficulty. Stough Reservoir is stop #4 on the Basin and Range Birding Trail. Birders can expect to see Prairie Falcons, Rufous Hummingbirds, and Wild Turkeys. Non-motorized boating and picnicking are also available.

Directions

From Alturas, go north 5 miles on US Highway 395 to Highway 299. Turn east on Highway 299 toward Cedarville and continue approximately 13 miles to Forest Road 43N07. Turn north and the campground is 1 mile on the left.
