About
Stone Mountain State Park is situated in the northwest mountains of North Carolina in Alleghany County, approximately 60 miles northwest of Winston-Salem. The park's family campground features 90 campsites on three loop roads, catering to tents, RVs, pop-up campers, and travel trailers. A Loop offers 37 tent-only sites with potable water faucets and a centrally located bathhouse, though this loop closes from November through February. B Loop has 41 sites with water and electric hookups (20, 30, and 50 amp), open year-round. C Loop provides 10 sites without hookups, also open year-round. All family campsites include a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring with grill, with maximum occupancy of 6 people per site. The park offers four group tent campsites that accommodate up to 35 people each. These are walk-in sites located near a bathhouse with toilets and hot showers. For backcountry enthusiasts, four primitive campsites are available along Widow's Creek Trail, part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, ranging from 1.5 to 3 miles from the parking lot. Stone Mountain State Park showcases a rugged high-country landscape with beautiful waterfalls, winding creeks, and bountiful trout streams. The park's centerpiece is a 700-foot granite dome formed millions of years ago. Visitors can enjoy hiking, trout fishing, horseback riding on bridle trails, and exploring the historic Hutchinson Homestead. The campground has 24-hour access via Royal Camp Lane, and firewood is available for purchase at the park office. Campers are limited to 14 consecutive nights within any 30-day period.
