About
Somerset Airfield is a no-fee primitive campground situated at a former airfield site in the Green Mountain National Forest near Somerset, Vermont. Located at the northern junction of Somerset Road and Forest Road 71, this rustic camping area provides approximately 7 dispersed campsites with fire rings arranged in a field setting. The campground serves as a gateway to exploring the southern Green Mountains, with nearby access to Somerset Reservoir and scenic Forest Road 71, which follows the East Branch of the Deerfield River. The campground offers basic amenities including vault toilets and fire rings at each site. Campers should come prepared, as there is no potable water on-site; water must be treated or filtered from nearby natural sources. While Somerset Road remains open year-round, winter camping requires self-sufficiency and proper cold-weather gear. The site is managed under dispersed camping regulations with a 14-night maximum stay in any 30-day period. The location provides opportunities for wildlife viewing, fishing in nearby waters, and exploring the extensive trail systems of Green Mountain National Forest. Shep Meadows, a former beaver pond where moose are occasionally spotted, is accessible from the campground area. The primitive nature of Somerset Airfield appeals to experienced campers seeking solitude in Vermont's mountain backcountry.
Directions
From Route 9 in Searsburg, take Somerset Road north for approximately 3 miles. The campground is on the left side at the junction with Forest Road 71.
