About

Melville Nauheim Shelter sits in the Green Mountain National Forest along the shared corridor of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and Vermont's Long Trail. Reached via a short spur trail approximately 1.5 miles north of Route 9 near Woodford, this classic three-sided Adirondack-style shelter offers a rustic overnight option for through-hikers and section hikers alike. The shelter can accommodate around 8 people inside, with additional tent platforms available nearby for overflow during peak season. A composting privy is located near the shelter, and water can be obtained from a stream where the spur trail meets the main trail. All water must be filtered or chemically treated before drinking. As with all Long Trail shelters, stays are limited to two consecutive nights. Maintained by the Green Mountain Club, the shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis year-round with no fees required. Hikers should bring a tent as backup during busy periods when shelters often fill. Bear-resistant food storage is required on Green Mountain National Forest land using bear boxes, bear canisters, or proper hanging techniques.
