About
Melville Nauheim Shelter is a backcountry overnight shelter situated on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and Long Trail in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. Built in 1977 by the Green Mountain Club, this frame structure accommodates up to 8 people and serves as the first shelter north of Route 9. The shelter is accessible via a 1.5-mile northbound hike on the Appalachian Trail from Route 9, featuring a steep initial climb with stone staircases. The shelter provides basic amenities including a composting toilet and access to water from a stream located where the spur trail meets the main trail. Hikers must treat or filter all water before use. The site is maintained jointly by the Green Mountain Club and the US Forest Service as part of the extensive shelter system along these iconic long-distance trails. This is a primitive backcountry site with no hookups, electricity, or modern facilities. Campers should come prepared for self-sufficient camping and practice Leave No Trace principles. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations.
Directions
From Route 9, hike north on the Appalachian Trail for approximately 1.5 miles. The shelter is accessed via a short spur trail.
