About

Story Spring Shelter is a backcountry overnight shelter situated along both the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Long Trail in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. Located at 2,810 feet elevation in a remote forest setting, this shelter is accessible only by hiking the Appalachian Trail south from Kelly Stand Road. The shelter provides basic accommodations for approximately eight hikers and features a standard three-sided design common to Appalachian Trail shelters. The facility includes a composting toilet and access to a natural water source located just north of the shelter. All water must be treated or filtered before consumption. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system or fees required. This is a primitive backcountry site intended for hikers traveling the Appalachian or Long Trail, offering basic protection from the elements in a wilderness setting. During winter months, access may be challenging as Green Mountain National Forest roads typically close to vehicle traffic from December 15 through May 1. Winter users should be prepared for snow conditions and limited road access to trailheads.

Directions

Hike the Appalachian Trail south from Kelly Stand Road. The shelter is located approximately 1,637 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia.
