About
Story Spring Shelter is a traditional three-sided Adirondack-style backcountry shelter situated on the Appalachian National Scenic Trail where it coincides with Vermont's Long Trail. Located in the Manchester Ranger District of the Green Mountain National Forest near Sunderland, the shelter provides overnight accommodations for long-distance hikers traveling through southern Vermont. The shelter typically accommodates 6-10 people and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or advance reservations. Amenities are primitive: a composting privy is located nearby, and water is available from a spring source but must be filtered or treated before drinking. There is no potable water on site. Hikers should practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash. Access is by foot only via the Appalachian Trail south from Kelly Stand Road. The stay limit is two consecutive nights. Hikers are advised to avoid hiking during Vermont's mud season from April through Memorial Day weekend to protect fragile trail conditions.
Directions
Hike the Appalachian Trail south from Kelly Stand Road.
