About
Silver Falls Guard Station is a historic Forest Service administrative building situated on Waterfall Creek near the East Fork of the San Juan River at approximately 8,235 feet elevation. The guard station building is locked and not available for public rental or overnight use. The site functions as a day-use trailhead providing access to the scenic Silver Falls waterfall, a roughly 0.4-mile hike from the parking area. The area near Silver Falls is significant habitat for the Black Swift, a species of special concern that migrates annually from Brazil to nest at this waterfall from late May through late September. Visitors should be aware that the East Fork Road (FR 667) sustained flood damage in October 2025 and requires cautious driving. For overnight camping, visitors should consider nearby alternatives including East Fork Campground located 1 mile from Highway 160, or dispersed primitive camping sites along the East Fork of the San Juan River. The guard station itself offers only day-use facilities including a vault toilet and parking.
Directions
From Pagosa Springs, drive east on Highway 160 for approximately 10 miles. Turn right onto Forest Road 667 (East Fork Road). Continue approximately 8 miles on the dirt road. The guard station will be visible on the left side of the road.
