Scott Flat Campground

Open — Open year-round, first-come first-served with no reservation system. The suspension bridge on the South Fork National Recreation Trail accessed from the campground is currently closed due to storm damage; an alternate trailhead is available 1.5 miles up Forest Service Road 1S26 from Forest Glen.

Scott Flat Campground sits along the South Fork Trinity River in a remote, scenic area of Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This rustic campground offers 10 sites that can accommodate trailers up to 20 feet, accessed via unpaved Forest Service Road 1S25 off Highway 36. The campground serves as a key trailhead for the South Fork National Recreation Trail, a historic route following an old narrow gauge wagon road along one of Northern California's wildest and most scenic rivers. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees required. Basic amenities include vault toilets and picnic tables at each site, but there is no potable water system. Campers must treat or filter water from the river or bring their own supply. The setting is ideal for river access, with opportunities for swimming, fishing, and exploring the rugged river corridor. This lightly visited area offers a step back in time, with spectacular views from river bluffs, deep forests of fir, pine, and oak, and numerous primitive camping spots along the trail. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash of six feet or shorter within the developed campground. The area is open year-round, though seasonal conditions and unpaved road access may limit winter visits.

Directions

From Highway 36, take the Hell Gate turnoff to Forest Service Road 1S25. The campground is located half a mile from the highway on this unpaved road.
