Philpot Picnic Area
Open — Open year-round as a day-use picnic area with no fees. Unpaved forest road access may be difficult or impassable during winter months due to snow.
About
Philpot Picnic Area, previously designated as a campground, is now a day-use picnic facility located in the Hayfork area of Shasta-Trinity National Forest. This rustic site features 6 picnic spots and vault toilets but lacks a water system, so visitors must bring their own water. Access to the facility is via unpaved forest roads, including Rattlesnake Road and Forest Road 30N31. The picnic area serves as the trailhead for the Philpot Interpretive Trail, making it a popular stop for hikers looking to explore the surrounding forest. The facility is free to use and operates without reservations. Given its remote location and unpaved access, visitors should be prepared for primitive conditions and check current road conditions before visiting, especially during winter months when snow may impact accessibility.
Directions
From Hayfork, follow CA Highway 3 south and turn west on Rattlesnake Road. Turn right on Forest Road 30N31. Picnic area will be on the left.
