About

Hell Gate Campground provides a secluded camping experience along the Trinity River in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, about 11 miles west of Highway 3 on Highway 36 near Forest Glen. The campground features 17 campsites equipped with fire rings and bear-resistant food lockers for secure food storage. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water on site. The campground serves as the northern trailhead for the 21-mile South Fork National Recreation Trail, which extends south to Double Cabins on Forest Road 28N23 and is open to hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers on some stretches. The Trinity River offers opportunities for swimming at the rocky beach, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash of 6 feet or shorter. This is a first-come, first-served campground with no reservations. Sites are $6 per night, with a 50% discount available for Interagency Senior/Access Pass holders. Payment is by cash or check only. Given the 16-foot maximum trailer length, this campground is best suited for tent campers and smaller rigs.

Take Highway 3 south from Hayfork to Highway 36. Travel 11 miles west.
