About
Mad River Campground is situated on a bluff overlooking the Mad River in the thickly forested mountains of northern California, about two miles south of Ruth Lake. The campground rests beneath a shaded canopy of Douglas fir, maples, oaks, and manzanita, with some riverfront sites offering direct trail access down to the water. Fishing is a primary draw, with anglers targeting various trout species in the Mad River. Ruth Lake, a 13,800-acre reservoir just three miles south, offers boating, swimming, and additional fishing. A marina and boat ramp provide lake access, and visitors should note that boat inspections for quagga mussels are required at the marina. The campground has approximately 40 single-family campsites with picnic tables and fire rings at each. Vault toilets and potable water are provided, though campers should call ahead to confirm water availability. There are no hookups, showers, or dump stations. Pets on leashes are permitted, and there is a 14-day stay limit.
