About

Mad River Campground is situated on the banks of the Mad River in the thickly forested mountains of northern California's Six Rivers National Forest. The campground sits on a bluff overlooking the river among oak trees and evergreen shrubs, with portions capped by tall Douglas fir providing ample shade. The 40 campsites include riverfront locations with trails leading down to the river, making it ideal for anglers targeting trout in the Mad River. Located about two miles south of 13,800-acre Ruth Lake, campers have easy access to additional water recreation including boating, swimming, and fishing. A marina and boat ramp at Ruth Lake provide convenient lake access, with maps and directions available on the information boards in the campground. The campground accommodates both tent and RV camping with a maximum trailer length of 22 feet. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Amenities include vault toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, and drinking water availability (though campers should call ahead to confirm water status). Pets on leashes are permitted, and there is a 14-day occupancy limit. The nightly fee is $12 per site including one vehicle, with a $5 fee for additional vehicles.

Directions

From Highway 101 traveling north, continue to the Highway 36 exit near Fortuna. Turn right heading east for approximately one hour until you reach the town of Mad River. After crossing the bridge at Mad River, look for the Mad River Road turn-off on the right (signed for Ruth Lake). Continue for 10 minutes to reach the campground. From Interstate 5, turn at Highway 36 at Red Bluff and head west for two hours until you see the sign for Ruth Lake at Mad River Road.
