About

Roman Nose Lakes is a remote recreation area in the Idaho Panhandle National Forests featuring three pristine sub-alpine lakes nestled in the Selkirk Mountains. Dispersed camping is authorized at designated sites near the middle and upper lakes only, with the lower lake reserved as a day-use area. The site includes a vault toilet and picnic tables but no potable water, requiring campers to pack in all drinking water. The lower lake holds the distinction of being the only wheelchair-accessible mountain lake in the Selkirks, with boardwalks leading to a fishing dock and wheelchair pads at two fishing locations. Trail #165 connects all three lakes and offers spectacular views of both the Selkirk and Cabinet mountain ranges. Fishing opportunities include brook, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Only non-motorized boats are permitted on the lakes. Access to the site requires traveling rough forest roads. From US 95 south of Bonners Ferry, take Deep Creek Loop Road toward Moravia, then Lions Den Road to Snow Creek Road #402, continuing over 7 miles to the parking area at 5,900 feet elevation. The area has one group site and two single campsites, all first-come, first-served with no fees.
