About

Rifle River Ranch Campground offers 25 rustic sites spread through a wooded setting along the upper reaches of the Rifle River in northeastern Lower Michigan. Part of the Rifle River State Recreation Area, the campground provides a quieter alternative to the larger Grousehaven Modern Campground while still offering essential amenities including vault toilets, hand-pump potable water, fire rings, and picnic tables. The sites are generously sized and well-spaced, providing good privacy for tent campers and smaller RVs. The recreation area encompasses 4,449 acres of rolling northern Michigan terrain featuring 10 no-wake lakes and ponds, seven miles of trout streams, and the scenic Rifle River corridor. Originally a private hunting and fishing retreat called Grousehaven owned by automotive executive Harry Mulford Jewett, the property was acquired by Michigan in 1945 and opened as a state recreation area in 1963. Today visitors enjoy fishing for bluegill, bass, northern pike, yellow perch, and trout, along with paddling, swimming at the campground's designated beach, and exploring the 14-mile trail system. An observation tower and historic swinging bridge add unique character to the park experience.
